Deliveries in Cornwall can be tricky. Cornwall’s rural landscape means many of us live further from local towns or even a local shop, meaning we can’t just nip out to get something when we need it. E-bikes are helping to close the gap between towns and rural communities by making cycling faster and less strenuous, even in hilly and hard to reach places!
Demand for e-cargo couriers has boomed since the first lockdown, moving us towards a future of cleaner and safer streets, and exciting opportunities for businesses to reduce their carbon footprint. E-cargo bikes can travel to areas that are less accessible for traditional delivery vehicles, particularly when it comes to the challenge of last-mile deliveries. ‘Last-mile deliveries’ refer to the final step in the end-to-end supply chain that is often the most costly and complex, i.e. pedestrianised streets, busy or narrow roads, or otherwise hard to reach areas.
Following the pandemic, online shopping reached record highs. Amazon, who’s profits were booming, quickly came under scrutiny from activist groups to tackle their ever-growing carbon footprint, and take responsibility for the harmful emissions of their delivery methods. Amazon began transforming its “last-mile” deliveries by moving packages from HGVs to smaller, more eco-friendly vehicles. And this year, for the first time in the UK, Amazon customers are receiving deliveries by e-bike!
The future is electric!
In the next ten years clean air initiatives will work to reduce the number of cars on the road, and towns will follow cities to develop their infrastructure to accommodate more bikes and e-bikes.
The government has announced it will ban sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. Clean Air Zones are being introduced in major cities, and towns are becoming more pedestrianised; many Cornish towns are restricting vehicle access to reduce traffic and pollution levels on their highstreets, to create a healthier environment for their communities.
