If you’re a bike enthusiast, one of the things you no doubt enjoy most about cycling is the freedom and excitement that comes with zipping around on two wheels. But as we head into winter, there will be wetter days ahead so what happens when the rain starts pouring down? Do you let it dampen your spirits and keep you indoors or do you get your bum in the saddle and embrace the elements?
Whilst ebikes, like any bikes are not designed to be submerged in water, they are water resistant to an extent and can handle a downpour (disclaimer: puddles or any pools of water should be avoided), but there are safety precautions you should take before heading out into the rain!
Riding an eBike in the rain might initially seem like a daunting task but if you’re well prepared, it can be an exhilarating experience. Rainy days can add an extra element of adventure to your eBike rides. The deserted streets, the sound of raindrops, and the fresh smell in the air create a unique atmosphere that can make your ride even more memorable. So here’s our top tips for getting the most out of your wet ‘n wild ride!
Safety First Essential Tips for Riding an eBike in the Rain
Traction Matters
Wet surfaces can be slippery, so it’s crucial to have good traction. Make sure your e-bike tyres are properly inflated and have sufficient tread depth to maintain grip on wet roads.
Check the brakes
Check your brakes for any signs of wear and tear and make sure they are functioning properly. Wet conditions can reduce brake performance, so it’s crucial to have well-functioning brakes. Also, remember that your braking distance will increase on wet surfaces so apply your brakes gently and give yourself more time to stop to avoid skidding or losing control and avoid braking on slippery surfaces, such as manhole covers.
Check the chain and drivechain
Look for any signs of rust or excessive wear on your chain. Lubricate it if necessary and ensure that the gears shift smoothly. Our Muc-off range sells all the stuff you need to clean and maintain your bike in tip top condition.
Take it easy around corners
Part of the fun of riding an ebike is the extra power it gives you. But when riding in the rain, just remember that this extra power can be dangerous if used without caution. Slow down more than usual when approaching corners – too fast and you could skid out of control!
Plan your route
Whether you plan on riding a familiar route to work or are embarking on a new adventure, be sure you check ahead before leaving home, that the roads and/or tracks are clear and safe to use. The last thing you want is to get stuck in the mud somewhere or find that that the only way through a road is to ride through a massive pool of water. If you happen upon these conditions unexpectedly, turn around a find an alternative route!
If you’re on a Super73, don’t ride it on the beach! Whilst these bikes have fat tyres equipped for riding moderately on sand in normal conditions, they would not cope well on rough, wet and grainy surface in the rain, so for your own safety and for the preservation of your bike, avoid!
Be Visible
In rainy conditions, visibility can be reduced for both you and other road users. Wear bright or reflective clothing, use lights (flashing lights that you can attach to your helmet or handlebars are great) and consider adding reflective tape to your bike for extra visibility.
Essential Gear for You and Your Bike When Riding in the Rain
Wear the Right Gear
Invest in proper rain gear to keep yourself dry during your ride. A waterproof jacket, trousers, and shoe covers can go a long way in ensuring your comfort and protection from the elements. Wear waterproof gloves to keep your hands warm and dry and a helmet cover will help to keep rain from dripping down onto your face while riding.
Mudguards (Fenders)
Attach mudguards to your eBike to keep the spray from the wheels off your body and reduce the amount of water splashing onto your bike’s components.
Bike Accessories
Waterproof Panniers or backpacks are ideal for carrying your personal belongings and bike essentials (like a pump and puncture repair kit). If it’s not raining when you set out, but there’s a chance of rain during your ride, you can take extra lights and riding gear with you, for that just-in-case factor!
Summary
Whilst this might seem like a long list of things to consider before heading out on your bike in the rain, you can’t put a price on your safety. Post-ride checks
Dry the bike: After riding in the rain, use a dry cloth or towel to wipe down your e-bike, focusing on the frame, drivetrain, and other components. This helps prevent rust and corrosion.
Lubrication: Apply lubricant to the chain and other moving parts if they have been exposed to moisture. This helps prevent rust and keeps the bike running smoothly. If you’re looking for quality products to maintain your bike to a high standard, check out the Muc-Off range in our shop!
